There is a long narrative, musings on Immortality. One of the oldest stories, the Epic of Gilgamesh, is a quest to restore the life of a friend that had died. The Greeks, very much against immortality, the Christians and the immortality of the soul in the afterlife. The Alchemists founded the field of chemistry and modern pharmacology. Modern science is only continuing the quest.
